Port Lligat
Port Lligat or Portlligat is located to the north of Cadaqués. It holds a beautiful beach which is ideal for kids and families and a house of Salvador Dalí.
The village is small and ideal for tourism looking for a quieter alternative to the main cities in the Costa Brava or Cap de Creus. Port Lligat is a calm village that I recommend for two reasons. One, because of the scenery of the beach and the great clear water and secondly because of the historic value of the village with museum of the house of Salvador Dalí right on the sea shore.
The hotels in Port Lligat are quite expensive compared to other hotels in nearby villages like Llancà or Port de la Selva. This is due to the exclusivity of the place given that there are only two hotels available.
Why is Port Lligat important?
Port Lligat renewably known as the village where the famous painter Salvador Dalí lived. From 1930 until 1982 when Gala (Dalí’s wife) died, they lived in a front beach house located in Port Lligat, which back then was a fishermen village.
Many tourists make the trip to Port Lligat because of the history that the famous painter has forever embroided in the village. As now the house where they lived is a museum. For more information about the museum, such as prices visit the following website: Horaris i preus | Fundació Gala – Salvador Dalí (salvador-dali.org).
The beach is breath-taking as the rocky surroundings make the scenery spectacular. The water is very shallow, you can walk very far in the water and still it will not cover you from head to toe. Therefore, it is ideal for kids and families that are looking for a safe beach where your kids can swim without fear of drowning as in the majority of the area you can touch the ground below the water with your feet at any given time that you like to take a rest.
Island of Port Lligat
The island has an area of 8.4 ha and is only 30 m away from the nearest point of land. Therefore, you can swim to the island with no problem. Also on the main beach at Portlligat there is a place where they rent kayaks which is quite popular and cheap.
You can visit the island of foot or surrounding it with the kayak.
Please be aware of the wild boars as, the area is populated with many of them and they have grown accustomed to the tourists and sometime come near people if they smell foot on someones bag.
Why is Port Lligat expensive?
Because Port Lligat has become a touristic place, the prises of the region have risen, alike Cadaqués and other coastal villages like Port de la Selva or Llançà. To be clear Port Lligat is no where near the level of touristic fluency that Cadaqués has. It is not as known and therefore no visited as much as Cadaqués is. The pity is that to go to Port Lligat you have to cross Cadaqués.
The only road that goes to Cadaqués is a curvy road from Roses or Port de la Selva. It often holds huge traffic jams in the summer days, specially at midday.
Therefore we recommend going early in the morning to avoid the traffic.
Port Lligat hotels
There are currently (2023) two hotels in Port Lligat. One is the Hotel Calina and the other is Hotel Port Lligat. The prices range around the 200 € in summer.
Both hotels have two stars and are located near the beach so the location is not an issue of dispute.
As the location is bit remote, and the building tend to be old, the wifi is not the best in this area. So you should go expecting to disconnect from society for the period there, these hotels are better known for the sea views and their color white as is tradition in the region and for the outdoors swimming pool.
Choosing a hotel in Port Lligat and not Cadaqués will definitely mean that you can travel by car and that, that you are looking for a more remote destination, where there will much fewer tourists. Although there aren’t as many things to do as in Cadaqués you can always drive there as it is only 5 min away via a road that is not often busy.
