How to get from Venice airport to Venice City

This guide on how to get from Venice airport to the center will help you prepare this transfer in the most comfortable and fastest way, so that your first contact with one of the most beautiful cities in the world is as pleasant as possible.

If you arrive in Venice by plane you will do so at the Marco Polo international airport, located 10 kilometers away. It must be taken into account that although Venice is an island, it is connected by road to the peninsula, allowing you to reach the city in addition to by boat, car and bus.

There are mainly three options to go from Marco Polo international airport to the center:

Venice Airport to city by Bus

From Marco Polo airport, buses from the ATVO and ACTV companies leave you in Piazzale Roma, in about 20 minutes, for 10 euros or 18 if you buy the round trip.

The ATVOs have a frequency of 20 minutes, their departures coinciding with the arrival of the flights. In addition, this company has another line that will take you directly to the Mestre train station, which can be a good option if you are staying in this area.

The ACTV company has line 5 to transfer from Marco Polo airport to Venice, with a frequency similar to that of ACTV, although it has less space for luggage.

Once you arrive by bus to Piazzale Roma in Venice, if you are not staying in this area, you will have to walk or take a vaporetto that will take you to the historic center or the Dorsoduro neighborhood. The most common stops on this boat are those in Rialto, next to the famous bridge, and San Marco, located a few meters from the Doge’s Palace.

The Vaporetto ticket costs 9.5 euros each way, although it is advisable if you are going to make more than two boat trips that day, take the one-day or multi-day ticket, with which you can save a lot of money.

Depending on the luggage you are carrying, we suggest you try to get in the back or the front to enjoy the incredible views of the Grand Canal.

Venice Airport to city by Boat (Alilaguna)

Some people prefer to use the Alilaguna water buses, which are the most comfortable transportation service to get from Marco Polo Airport to the center of Venice.

In addition to comfort, during the journey you will enjoy magnificent views of the Lagoon and Venice, which will make the journey from the airport to Venice much more pleasant.

Taking this boat is also a good option if you are staying on the islands of Murano, Burano or Torcello, as it stops with the green line.

The Alilaguna departure pier is located at the airport itself, a 10-minute walk from the departure gates, making the transfer very easy, since you only have to follow the signs of the cartels.

If you are staying in the central area of Venice, you should take the Alilaguna orange line, which in addition to crossing the Venetian lagoon, passes through a large part of the Grand Canal with several stops including Rialto and San Marco.

The only negative points of this transport are that the journey lasts an hour and a quarter and the price is 15 euros or 27 euros, if you buy the round trip.

alilaguna

The shipping network is made up of five lines connecting the Marco Polo Airport and Cruise Terminal terminals with the centre of Venice, the Lido, Murano and Punta Sabbioni.

Venice Airport to city by Private Transport / Taxi

The prices of taxis, which can exceed 100 euros if they are private and 35 euros if they are shared, make them only recommended if you arrive early in the morning or your hotel is far from a Vaporetto or Alilaguna stop.

What did we use?

When we arrived at the airport, we decided to take a bus because the bus stop was near our hotel. However, when coming back as you can see in our port “5 days itinerary in Venice” we used Alilaguna since we were coming directly from Burano and it was the more convenient option.
